Now that deregulation has proven to lower electricity rates for many energy consumers a weird phenomenon is happening in the PECO electric utility area.

People in the PECO electric utility locations are choosing to not shop and compare electric rates. A large majority of PECO elecricity customers would rather not go through the hassle of changing to a new electric company.

In every state where electric rates have dropped in price due to deregulation people eventually choose to switch away from their monopoly electric utility.

Although Pennsylvania energy consumers in PECO utility have not gotten on board in large part they will eventually.

The question to ask yourself is will you switch to an alternate electric provider in PA now or later?

Here are some questions and answers that may relieve your fears about changing PA electric companies.

Who will respond to power outages after I switch electric companies in PA? PECO is still your pole and wires company and will respond to all power outages.

Will the electric service differ in quality? No the electricity comes from the same pole and wires and generation facility as it has always.

What changes when I switch to a competitive electric rate and company? Your billing changes, the price you pay, as well as customer service.

Can I try before I commit to a new PA electric supplier? Yes you can get on a month to month plan and if you are not happy you can switch back to your old provider and pay no penalty.

How do I begin comparing electricity companies in the PECO area and find a cheaper PA electric rate? Use our comparison chart above and begin by typing in your zip code.Similar Posts:

Many people do not realize that the price of the gasoline you put into your car at the gas pump is about 40% taxes and fees.

Electricity Texas Compare

When you look at the advertised price on the big billboard at the gas station you know all fees and charges are bundled into the price.

Unfortunately many Dallas Texas electric companies like to hide government fees and taxes from the Dallas rate plan.

All electricity companies will leave off the sales taxes from the rate but that is not what we are talking about here.

Typical fees left off a Dallas electricity rate plan from tricky electric providers include the following:

Ancillary charges

Electric Meter defined rate price

TDSP Charges

Fuel surcharges

Now not all Dallas energy service providers hide fees and charges but there are those that do and so it is worth letting you know about these schemes.

Ancillary charges are additional charges that get tagged on to your rate because of the costs associated with the generation and transmission of electricity. Although your retail electric provider is only passing these charges through they should be bundling them into their advertised rate so you know what you will be paying and have the ability to compare these rates with other Dallas electric companies.

Electric meter defined rate is when an electricity company advertises a rate in which their electricity customers sign up based on that price only to be charged a different rate based on the date the meter is read and switched into their name. Basically the provider charges the customer the market price at the time the meter is read rather than the rate they advertised to the customer when they called to order electric service.

TDSP Charges are the pass through charges that come from the transmission and generation company. These are not the responsibility of the retail electric provider so some providers will not include these in their advertised price. By not bundling in TDSP charges some providers rates will look about 3 cents cheaper than their competitors. This offers an easy way for Dallas electricity companies to sucker in unsuspecting customers as the industry standard pricing structure in Texas is to bundle these into the advertised rate plan. By deviating from the standard customers think the devious electric company is the same as the competitors only cheaper.

Fuel Surcharges are the raw commodity cost associated to a “fixed rate” that has a variable changing component to that fixed cost. So although it will be advertised as a fixed electric rate a part of the rate will change in price based upon fuel commodity price increases or decreases. This has the effect of making an advertised fixed rate not really a fixed rate at all which is confusing to most customers that sign up for a rate plan like this. This also suggests that the Dallas electric companies that offer such a rate plan know that they are capitalizing from the dishonest purposeful confusion to their customers with such a rate plan.

We hope this has given you some useful tools in your arsenal when comparing Dallas electricity suppliers and rate plans. As you can see there are many ways to get confused during the process of searching for a cheap electricity rate.

We offer a comparison chart that bundles in all fees and charges excluding taxes allowing you to easily compare Dallas fixed electricity rate plans with one another. We also compare variable rate offers from multiple electricity providers but these can change after the first month so as a safety precaution we recommend fixed electric rate plans over variable in order to get the best value and to make an accurate comparison.

A study was done by COMPETE Coalition to determine the effect electricity deregulation has had on energy consumers and what has been shown is a strong desire to choose and switch electric companies.

Comparison of Electricity Company Prices

Rather than going with a monopoly electric provider which only offer one or two rate plans commercial and industrial businesses can choose advanced ways to save money on their electricity account.

Residential customers also are more likely to switch from the monopoly electric company than to just stay with status quo. As of 2003 electricity sales from retail electricity companies has doubled.

With deregulated markets new resources and tools become available to large commercial and industrial customers that enables them to see trending prices and set targets in order to manage risk and have price predictability.

These tools give US companies the ability to show how an advanced energy management strategy that strategically locks in electricity prices over the course of 1 or 2 years can dramatically lower a businesses largest overhead cost, electricity service.

If states like Texas, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, and Pennsylvania had chosen to not deregulate their electric utility markets there would not be the electricity plans available that can be tailor fitted to a certain type of electricity usage account.

The type of forecasting tools and proposal reports would also be lacking and behind in technology in regards to the type of data reporting we have now to show commercial energy customers.

What has been seen in some of these deregulated electricity markets from the positive aspects of deregulation are the following:

Competitive electricity markets improve the wholesale energy business.

A higher level of efficiency is achieved from the competitive nature of a free economy and deregulation.

More customized electricity rate plans become available as providers find ways to differentiate themselves from their competitors providing more choice to customers.

Customers in deregulated markets whether they be residential or commercial are compelled to switch to an alternate supplier when offered the choice in a deregulated energy market.

The COMPETE coalition represents over 515 electricity companies, suppliers, and providers in deregulated electric utility markets in the US.

Comparing rates requires understanding that not every electricity service provider includes all fees in their prices.

Now these providers should include all fees in their rates but that doesn’t mean they all will.

So how do find an electricity provider that includes all fees in their rates.

Electricity Service Comparison

Well they all will eventually once you get your bill but when shopping it helps to use a site like this that bundles these fees into the rate.

By viewing our comparison chart you can see what the electricity rates really look like and get power turned on a little sooner and be confident about the electric company you have chosen.

So to get started just type in your zip code and click on “Compare”

If you happen to be a commercial or industrial business rather then a residential customer be sure to choose “commercial” from the drop down menu.

Smart electric meters in Texas have really caused some emotional rants throughout the blogosphere from Texas electric consumers noticing price increases that they can’t justify base don how they use their electricity.

Comparison of Texas Electricity Prices and Providers

More then a few electric service consumers have complained to me that the smart meters deployed in the ERCOT and Centerpoint utility areas were reporting invalid data.

They claim that they now pay more for electricity service than they did when it was the old meter technology.

Smart Electric Meters Texas Deployments

If this is true the smart meter deployment was a huge mistake and is wreaking havoc on innocent Texas electricity consumers across the ERCOT grid.

So far Centerpoint Energy pole and wires company has deployed 2 million electricity meters across their service territory which makes up a lot of the Houston metro area.

Oncor Electric Delivery has deployed more than 3 million smart meters. The deployments should be completely finished by both electric utilities by 2012.

Oncor handles most of the North Texas area such as Dallas and Fort Worth metro areas and as far out as places like Tyler and Killeen.

The estimated savings to the electric utilities is around 300 million dollars per year. Customers in the Centerpoint Energy utility area must pay $3.05 surcharge to pay for their meter. Oncor utility customers must pay $2.19 surcharge each month on their electric bill for their smart meters.

Comparison of Texas Electricity Service Providers

Because the Texas electric utilities are saving so much money it should cause transmission and distribution charges in the Texas area to drop in price over time.

Although some people are still paying this surcharge for a meter that hasn’t even been installed yet it should start positively impacting the price people pay for electric service due to the 300 million dollars in savings each year by using real time data meter technology.

In the AEP TCC (Texas Central Company) utility area of Texas the approximate savings is around $89 million dollars a year and in AEP TNC (AEP Texas North Co) the savings per year is around $32.6 million a year. These electric utility areas are smaller populations which is why the savings aren’t as large.

Germany, Spain, UK, Netherlands, China, Brazil, New Zealand, Canada and several other countries are all launching or will soon launch smart meter technology across their electric grids and in many cases this is not a choice for consumers to opt in to. The smart meter idea is only going to become more accepted and implemented in our electricity grid system and will increase in efficiency over time.

With more countries deciding to use smart electric meters the shared knowledge exchanged between countries will only further enhance these systems and make them more productive for both states and electricity consumers alike.

Looking at California as what is to come for Texas which is just now finishing rolling out their smart meters across the grid we see some very positive things.

Southern California Edison began deploying smart meters in 2009 in a $1.3 billion dollar plan that when completed will have installed 5.3 million smart meters in 11 counties throughout the state of California. CA calls this smart meter plan “SmartConnect”.

It’s impact will reduce electricity usage consumption by 1,000 MW once the smart meters are all deployed and this in very dense populus areas. This translates to hundreds of millions of dollars in savings to CA electricity consumers.

PECO Energy Company in California which is another electric utility plans to deploy 600,000 smart meters to their 1.6 million customers. Customers will be able to see their electric usage in real time and it will allow for low-income people to purchase prepaid electricity without having to come up with a deposit.

Smart Electric Meter Deployment in the US

There is no end in site for deploying smart electric meters. Studies have been done multiple times to determine if inaccurate data is being sent from smart meters to the utility company. When research is done looking into Texas electricity consumers complaints regarding a faulty smart meter it is almost always determined to by reading the usage correctly. This could mean that the old technology was giving them a price break and now some customers with working meters are now paying for actual usage instead of lower faulty readings.

When discovering ways to save on electricity one of those ways for most people eventually comes out as a question, “Does solar power work?”

I have asked this questions as probably many of you have especialy now that the government seems to be talking about it all the time.

There are even federal government programs and even public utility programs that offer 30% – 50% in subisdies off the cost of a solar panel system installed in a Texas home.

Oncor electric delivery and Centerpoint Energy both offer different programs throughout the year and may times you have to be put on a waiting list.

The federal government also opens and closes solar panel installation programs throughout the year for solar panels to be installed on a Texas homes roof.

So is it worth it? Well from what I understand it is really only worth it if you do a partially off the grid type of system and do not buy deep cycle batteries.

A big part of the cost in a solar system are deep cycle batteries.

Shop and Compare Texas Electricity Service Rates and Plans

The time it takes to recoup your investment in a solar system on a houses roof is about 30 years if you buy the deep cycle batteries to go along with the system.

Your electricity rate in Texas can be fixed at around 11 cents per kilowatt hour for 30 years with this type of system.

Many might say that they pay less than this. I have an answer for you. Sure you signed up at 7 cents per kilowatt hour with some electric company out there but go get your bill and add all the charges up and then divide those charges by the kilowatt hours you used for the month.

I bet in many cases you are paying about the same if not more for your Texas electricity service than this long term 30 year fixed rate using a solar panel system.

I personally would not invest in such a long term investment to have a 30 year fixed electric rate but I would do a smaller hybrid system.

What you can do instead is buy solar panels that install on your roof that can be upgraded by simply plugging in another one as you can afford to do so.

This go solar and grow plan allows for you to try the whole idea out before you are completely sold on the idea of trying to be partially off the Texas electric grid.

I am much more willing to do this than spending $30,000 – $50,000 on the whole shabang. With this type of system you are not required to buy deep cycle batteries but instead can send any electricity generated to the power pole and transformer.

The electric lines act as your battery if you will and actually rotate your electric meter backwards giving you credit for electricity generated that you send back on the pole.

This is the best way to setup a solar panel home system in my opinion and can be done affordably and with a small up front investment.

I call this the go and grow plan for solar. If you are interested in learning more about a company that can setup a starter solar system on your home at an affordbale price as well as see if you qaulify for government and utility subsidy programs please comment below.

When picking between residential electric providers in Philadelphia you can get a little confused in the shopping process simply because advertising can be a little tricky.

Compare Electricity Rates in Philadelphia

I was looking at some residential electricity ads in the Philadelphia area today that I saw online and one thing stood out to me.

Additional fees and charges and how they are included in the advertised rate for PA electricity. Just like in other states sometimes these additional fees are not shown in the ads.

This type of pricing can be confusing if you are trying to budget what exactly your Philadelphia electricity rate will be.

Call to speak with a Philadelphia Energy Consultant at 1-800-971-4020

If you are after the best price there can be some confusion as well because what may look like the best price in Philadelphia may not have everything included.

One culprit could be this thing called “Stranded Costs”

Stranded Costs are also known as competitive transition charges or CTC for short. Basically the PA government has required some inefficient power plants to continue to run even though they are not profitable for the electricity generation plant.

This government regulation has nothing to do with a competitive electricity market and so these are kind of like taxes and fees from the government that get past through to the consumer from the generation company.

Regardless of whether you choose a competitive electric provider in Philadelphia that is new to the state or go with the monopoly utility in your area you will still have to pay these fees.

The Philadelphia electricity supplier could get away with telling you that they do not have to show these costs in their advertised electric rate since they are simply passing them on to you from the electricity generation company.

This can easily be a point of serious confusion for a residential or commercial electric service customer in Philadelphia.

It is important for you to know about these hidden fees and charges known as “Stranded Costs” and be sure to ask the competitive electric supplier you are thinking about signing up with if they have included these charges in their advertised rate.

This charge is a very easy thing a provider will want to leave off of their advertised rate to make their electricity rates and plans look cheaper than other Philadelphia electricity suppliers rate plans.

Below is more information on Stranded Costs in Philadelphia Electric Bills

Q: What are the “competitive transition charges” fees on my Philadelphia electric bill?

A: Stranded costs are expenses for PA electricity utility plants and equipment that were built before deregulation. Many of these old inneficient power plants are the coal fired plants built in the 50′s and 60′s. These energy costs cannot be recovered in a competitive electricity market but are needed to keep power being generated to meet demand for electric service. The Public Utility Commission of Pennsylvania allows electricity companies to recover some but not all of these costs through a transition charge on electric customers’ bills. These costs are now itemized on your PA electric bill; however, they are not new charges. Most of these costs were part of your rates under regulation. The CTC or Stranded Costs will be phased out over time. It is important to verify if the electric company in PA you choose has included these charges in their advertised rate plan so you know exactly what you are signing up for.

Q: Do we have to pay stranded costs if we are buying generation from a supplier?

A: Yes. Stranded costs have nothing to do with who provides your electricity service. All customers who receive PA electricity over the (Electric Distribution Company) EDC’s transmission and distribution system pay stranded costs. In some EDC (Electric Distribution Company) territories, these charges will disappear beginning in 2002.Similar Posts:

Senate Bill 695 allows new electric service customers in California to choose a competitive electric service provider beyond the standard monopoly electric utilities.

The monopoly electric utility areas covered under Senate Bill 695 are Pacific Gas and Electric, San Diego Gas and Electric, and Southern California Edison.

Compare Electricity Service Companies

Choosing an alternate electric company over the default monopoly energy providers in CA is an option only open to commercial businesses at this time.

If the commercial business side of electricity deregulation goes well in California they may eventually open up the residential electricity market up to deregulation as well.

We assist both industrial and commercial electric service customers in California in finding a cheaper electric rate for their company through a reverse auction process.

We go out to bid for your company to competing electricity providers in your area.

We facilitate the bidding process by working the rates down among these providers as we represent you as our client.

Once all rates are in and at their bottom line lowest prices we create a proposal and send it over via email.

One of our energy consultants will go over the proposal with you on the phone and explain the savings in dollars compared to your current electricity provider.

If you have yet to choose a California electricity company and are a new business we will show you a comparison of rates next to the monopoly utility in your area.

Once you have picked the cheapest electricity provider and rate plan in the proposal we will send you an energy contract from the winning provider.

This whole process can be completed in just a couple of days.

Electricity Choice in PA

Electric rates are based on a few factors and part of that has to do with what the Federal Energy Regulatory Committee approves of.

State owned utilities and private electric utility monopolies in Pennsylvania have their prices and rates approved by the FERC.

Various parties can come in and complain about a possible rate increase because the state of PA allows consumers to know ahead of time if there might be a rate increase on the table.

PA Electric Rates Compare

This regulation and oversight is supposed to prevent over pricing of a basic consumer service such as electric service in PA.

In the situation of using old outdated power generation facilities to meet peak demand for electricity instead of building new more efficient power plants there has to be a settling on how that extra cost will be spread out among electric providers and the retail electric consumer.

Exelon is a publicly traded corporation that was created in the year 2000 when a merger was concluded between PECO Energy Company and Unicom of Philadelphia.

Unicom is the same thing as Commonwealth Edison so the combining of both electric companies created a massive company known as Exelon that is primarily an electricity generation and distribution company but also works in the retail electricity market as well.

One of the main sources of energy generation for Exelon is Nuclear power. These power plants represent some of the cheaper more efficient types of electricity power generated for the states of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York.

Some of the less efficient more expensive sources of power that Exelon controls are old coal fired power plants built in the 50′s and 60′s.

Because the commodity of coal has skyrocketed in price in recent months these old outdated maintenance nightmare facilities are becoming too expensive to keep running.

Coal Power Generation

The best business decision for Exelon would be to close down these power plants.

The PA government however cannot allow this as these power plants are needed to provide electricity during peak demand periods in the day for the state of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and now potentially New York city as well.

To keep these power plants running requires that the PA government regulate price increases on the average Joe’s retail electricity bill.

Unfortunately your Pennsylvania electricity rate may not be so clear going forward when seen in advertisments on radio, TV, and newspaper if the PUC for the state of Pennsylvania doesn’t require electric companies to bundle these increased fees and charges in their advertised rates.

Many times electric providers will use price increases like these as an opportunity to make their electric rates look better than a competitors.

These PA electric companies do this by leaving off these additional fees while more honest ethically run electric suppliers include the additional charges to show full price disclosure.

What ends up happening is an electric consumer may see a rate advertised for 7 cents per kilowatt hour when in reality it is 10 cents per kilowatt hour which is the same rate a competitor of theirs was advertising because they bundled in all charges.

Hidden Charges on Electric Bill

So please don’t blame PECO or Exelon which have been asked to keep open their inefficient coal power plants by the PA government to meet demand.

The government needs Exelon to continue running their coal fired power plants. These additional charges that may soon appear on your PA electric bill should also be bundled into any future advertised rates of the more than 30 retail electric providers in Pennsylvania.

If this issue causes a point of confusion for Pennsylvania electricity consumers please complain to the Pennsylvania electric choice PUC organization at http://www.puc.state.pa.us/utilitychoice/whatis.aspx?ut=ecSimilar Posts:

When deregulation occurs you still have an old but additional needed competitive environment going on beneath the scenes.

Power transmission companies in Pennsylvania get paid for expanding the electric grid, contracting with power generation companies and supplying reliable transport of energy to high demand areas. These same companies were the monopoly utility companies that also sold you retail electric service and still do even in a deregulated market.

Comparison of Pennsylvania Electricity Prices

Although now more retail electricity providers in Pennsylvania and Maryland can sell you electricity service these larger companies still do as well and continue to be the pole and wires company that delivers electricity to your home and business even if you choose a competing electricity company.

You see there will always be one pole and wire coming to your house so these large transmission companies will still continue to receive some of your electric bill dollars.

The transmission companies also can be your competitive retail electric provider unless they have decided to only be a transmission company.

These electricity transmission pole and wires companies in PA and NJ also operate in the business of building out the electric grid, creating new deals to send power to other states such as New York and the Long Island Power Authority which is a state owned utility in Manhattan.

Prior to deregulation this competitive environment has been going on and often times crosses state lines.

Some of the electricity transmission companies in New Jersey and Pennsylvania that participate in bringing electricity to your home or business are:

Jersey Central Power and Light Company

Neptune Regional Transmission System LLC

PECO Energy Company (Philadelphia Electric Company)

East Coast Power LLC

Hudson Transmission Partners LLC

Public Service Electric and Gas Company

Rockland Electric Company

Atlantic City Electric Company

Electric Power Transmission

These electric utilities have contracts with some of the new retail electric providers that sell competing electric rates in your area at often times cheaper prices than the old monopoly utilities.

These monopoly electric utilities assist in building out electric lines and connecting to generation facilities to provide electricity power where needed. Right now there is a competing deal under way for Hudson Transmission Partners to create an electric delivery line under the Hudson river from New Jersey to Manhattan. This would send New Jersey electric power across state lines to the Consolidated Edison electrical network.

Cross Hudson Corporation is another private electric transmission company that is also trying to compete to create a similar delivery line for electricity to the New York City Housing Authority from New Jersey.

Cross Hudson Corporations believes they are the better company for the job and so the fight is under way to see which electricity transmission company can get that job done best. Ultimately the state and federal regulators will determine who gets the job and it may pan out that two transmission lines are done by both companies.

Since both companies have already received contracts to do this job it appears that New York should have plenty of power for awhile.

This however can cause other issues both good and bad for those in New Jersey and even in Pennsylvania since both states rely on some of the same power generation facilities.

A cooperation among multiple states for retail electric power creates more demand for electric power which can drive up the price.

So if New York demands a lot of electricity during a peak period of the day it is up to the generation facilities and transmission companies to have planned for and worked out something to meet that demand without negatively effecting the price of electricity in their home states.

Having the energy transmission contract setup that does not over promise based on electricity generation facilities available to send out electric service is important.

New Jersey Electric Lines

Allowing two private companies to both construct electricity transmission lines from New Jersey to New York City will only help this demand situation in the long run which will have a more positive impact on retail electric customers in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

More power plants may have to be built in PA and New Jersey eventually if we continue to send power out of state but it also offers these local states greater access to power during high demand times.

Energy consumers in PA and New Jersey ultimately benefit in allowing their transmission and generation industries to grow to create lucrative energy contracts to supply power to New York City and continue to drive down power prices for their local citizens.Similar Posts:
